Philip guides and supports the development and expression of research strategies, gathers intelligence on funding opportunities, and through the Research Office team provides a professional service to support academics in winning and managing grants. Useful guidance is available to the Department’s academics on an internal webpage (Department access only).

He also helps companies and institutions to build relationships with the Department. This includes helping them with navigation around the Department, introductions to academics, and the negotiation of agreements (working closely alongside colleagues in the Research Services Division). The research pages provide a starting point for finding websites for academics, divisions, groups and themes.

Philip is responsible for the strong push on philanthropic fundraising as part of the Cambridge 800th Anniversary Campaign and the focus on marketing through the Department’s online news stories, newsletter (circulation 14,000) and press releases (through the University’s Office of Communications).

Another important aspect of Philip’s role is looking after the 200 postdoc researchers in the Department. This includes personnel management, training and career development.

As the Enterprise Champion for the Department, Philip offers initial advice and guidance to staff and students with concerning protection of intellectual property, commercialisation of ideas and consulting work. He liaises closely with Cambridge Enterprise in this role.

In addition to these duties, Philip gives courses on Scenario Planning for two Masters programmes (Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment and the Engineering for Sustainable Development), helps to design and facilitate research events involving academics and industrialists on request, and, for a few days each year, engages in some freelance business consulting in his spare time.
